The paint is peeling away leaving bare metal.

I had never seen a plate do this either until mine started peeling a week ago. It’s now about 1/3 of the way off and I know it’s only a matter of time before I get pulled over for it.... Ugh, I guess I’m probably going to have to pay to get new plates. I’m in NY, not sure where you are but I guess they all must be made the same way. To be fair, my plates have lived on 3 cars and survived a hit with a deer (which probably started the damage leading to the peel)

mine is doing this on the back of my Mazda 3. We have a problem in NY with this because of all the salt induced corrosion.

I think the DMV will replace it if you tell them it’s because it was peeling off. You have to tell them that’s why though, not just say I need new plates. One of those things you have to ask for I’m sure. And you will have a new plate number.

I’ve seen a lot of NJ plates peeling like that. This is the first time I’ve seen a non-Jersey plate peeling, guess it isn’t a Jersey thing.

I’ve seen that on Michigan plates when they get old. I think ever since we’ve switched away from the old white-on-blue plates, they’ve used a plastic film bonded to the metal plate instead of paint. eventually it de-laminates. But they still last longer than if they were painted since it’s a pain to get paint to stick to aluminum.

Are you certain? Could have flown to Canada and then proceeded.

For pretty much a decade now PA state inspection, emission, and registration stickers have been infamous for peeling off almost as soon as you apply them, but on the other hand the plates have been fairly robust.

I’d love paying many dollars for a sticker that won’t even stick.
You had one job!

Thanks, I was going to try this first but it’s good to hear it might work. My license needs to get renewed before July anyways so I have to got to the DMV soon as it is...

By chance was it painted by Ford in the early 1990s? :P
(I remember them having tons of issues with peeling paint around that time - to the point of class action lawsuits about it).

Ontario plates do this, too, but I don’t want to pay for new ones.

I never had a problem with registration stickers peeling off — on the contrary, I always ended up sticking each new one on top of the old one since I could never peel them off whenever I renewed. PA is getting rid of them, though, so now I don’t have to deal with them. It likely has to do with local police departments getting equipped with ALPR systems.
That leaves the inspection stickers, though. I just had my Miata inspected last month and the stickers are already starting to peel.

Leave it to Maine to select plates that can’t handle the vicious salt brine used on the roads here.
My plates peel too, though I haven’t seen it quite this bad before.

This is the first one that I’ve seen so they did pretty good.

The only time I see plates do that by me is from the pool trucks because I guess the chemicals that rust the beds away eat plates too.
But that plate isn’t even rusty. Weird.

I don’t know that they didn’t paint it.

I’ve seen Michigan plates do that as well. I don’t believe people hang onto plates so long. There was one that was missing almost half its coloring/coating.

Wasn’t that the case where the paint couldn’t adhere to the metal because of contamination from the deodorant used by line workers? Or was that GM?

Huh. I had to get a new one this year because of the 10-year mandatory replacement rule. The old one is still in great shape, though.

Yeah here in Michigan they retire certain styles so that makes folks replace them. I get new plates every year and keep the old one for my collection. Been doing it since I started driving back in ‘94/’95. Only costs a couple more bucks, so it’s no big expense. After paying through the nose for the registration, the small charge for a new plate is relatively minor.

That isn’t mine. I put illegal covers on to try to keep it intact. It isn’t working, but its better. Its so bad here they have recalled them at least once. If your plate is under 5 years old (IIRC) you can get it replaced for free here. I guess they deemed them sufficient for Canada. Its not like we ever get snow, or harsh weather or anything. We are virtually Arizona....
